The Gas Hill Gasp has been around since the 1940s as classic hill climb time trial. It was revived as an event for the 2011 Lord Mayor's Celebrations as a knockout competion with four riders in each race. To reach the final the competitors had to race four times up the hill. It will be run again on Friday 6 July 2012. The race format is unique and produced fast and exciting racing with heats every couple of minutes. Gas Hill was packed with spectators for the entire length and near the top it resembled a Tour de France mountain pass with the spectators crowding into the road, cheering and clapping each rider.

The competitors, mostly local, found it hard especially at the fourth
attempt but both competitors and spectators
want it to return next year.
Cash prizes were presented by Lord Mayor, Jenny Lay, with £100 up for the winner of the ‘stars’ section and £40 for the top hopeful. The event was organised by the Lotus Cars Cycle Race League under the rules of British Cycling (as far as they cover this new format).
Thanks to all the marshalls and helpers, Norwich City Council, and to the new hosts at the Red Lion, Bishopsgate.
